CEB allays fears of power cuts by ANTON NONIS The water levels in the hydro-electric reservoirs are dropping rapidly, creating doubts among the public whether there will be power cuts if the rains continue to fail. Meteorology Director, N.A. Amaradasa said there might be showers in the coming weeks. However, it is difficult to say whether these rains would be sufficient to bring about a positive change in the hydro-catchment reservoirs. Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Chairman, M. Zubair told the Sunday Observer that he had instructed officials to conserve water in the reservoirs whenever possible and make use of more thermal power to compensate for any power shortages. According to CEB records, the water capacity in the reservoirs last Thursday was at 23 per cent; this could generate 290 million units of power. The power generated for the 24 hours ended 6.00am on Thursday was 22.3 million units of which the thermal power contribution was 17.8 million units and hydro power 4.5 million units. CEB sources said that hydro-power generation may have to be reduced further to preserve the water reserves to prolong hydro power generation until the rains come. Chairman Zubair said the CEB is using all its thermal generators for power production. It has also procured thermal power generated by other sources such as Independent Power Producers and the micro generators owned by private individuals. |
