Sangaree to contest independently

by S. Selvakumar

TULF leader V. Anandasangaree will field an independent group in the Jaffna district headed by himself.

At the time of going to press Mr. Anandasangaree was in Jaffna and according to TULF sources in Jaffna he was in consultation with his supporters and a final decision on the nomination is expected today.

Meanwhile, the breakaway group backed by the LTTE will contest under the 'House' symbol of the former Federal Party. They will contest in the districts of Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vanni and Digamadulla.

The EPDP will field candidates in the Colombo district in addition to the above five districts. PLOTE, headed by D. Sidharthan, will contest the Vanni district. These parties are expected to hand in their nominations tomorrow in the respective district secretariat and according to Tamil political party sources, the nominations will be finalised this afternoon.

The Tamil National Alliance will be headed by Mavai Senathirajah in the Jaffna district, TELO leader Selvam Adaikalanathan in Vanni, TULF General Secretary R. Sampanthan in the Trincomalee district and Joseph Pararajasingham in Batticaloa.

Strangely all the others, including one Miss T. Kadirgamar are new to politics.

The Digamadulla TNA list is headed by former MP A. Chandranehru. According to Tamil political observers, Jaffna and Batticaloa districts will be dominated by the TNA while Trincomalee and Digamadulla will be hotly contested by the TNA, UNF, UPFA and the SLMC. The Vanni district is likely to witness a hot contest between the UNF, UPFA and the TNA.

Meanwhile, in another development, T. Maheswaran has said he will contest the Colombo district on a UNP ticket.
