SLMC, CWC on common UNF platform

by P. Krishnaswamy

The two main constituents of the United National Alliance (UNF) - the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) led by Ports and Shipping Minister Rauff Hakeem and Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) led by Minister of Housing and Estate Infrastructure Arumugam Thondaman - have again forged electoral alliance with the UNF to contest the April 2 general election. The SLMC will field candidates in Colombo, Kandy, Puttalam, Kurunegala and Kalutara on the UNF symbol 'Elephant' while in the North and East it will contest on its own party symbol 'Tree'.

Their election platform will be mainly based on unity of the Muslims, a negotiated settlement of the ethnic problem with equal and independent representation to the Muslims in the peace process, security of the Muslims of the North and East and recognition of the Muslims as a distinct ethnic community in par with other ethnic groups for power sharing, party sources said.

The CWC will field candidates in Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Matale, Badulla, Colombo districts on the UNF symbol. Minister Arumugam Thondaman, former Deputy Minister Muthu Sivalingam and Jagatheeswaran will lead their team of candidates in Nuwara Eliya district while former MP R. Yogarajan will be the lead candidate in Colombo. Former Uva PC Minister Satchithanandan, party frontliner Vadivel Suresh will lead in Badulla while in Kandy former Central PC Chairman Madhiyugaraja and Faizer Mustafa will lead their teams of candidates. Their election campaigns to be led by Arumugam Thondaman will be based on educational promotion, employment opportunities, housing and ownership of land for the plantation community, party sources said.
