OPA calls for 'worthy' candidates The Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) of Sri Lanka has appealed to all leaders and secretaries of political parties to nominate candidates worthy of representing the people. President of the OPA, Parakrama Karunaratne in a statement sent to all political parties on selecting the candidates for the forthcoming elections, has urged to look into the following aspects: 1. Educational qualifications and profession. 2. Assets and liabilities. 3. Pending criminal cases, if any. 4. Pending charges or investigations. 5. Declaration to abide by the election laws and other laws during the election campaign. The OPA chief has also called upon all political parties to have trouble-free elections within the framework of the law. Especially, we appeal that all candidates should desist from using public resources and honour the right of the people to choose their representatives without fear, intimidation, bribery or corruption. All candidates must realise that our country has suffered enough and further suffering should not be heaped on the people in the avarice of capturing or securing victory. In the post-election period, we appeal to all those elected to agree on a common agenda and arrive at a consensus to rebuild our nation. We further request all political parties to specifically pledge to the people that once the elections are over, they will all work together to achieve peace; respect the territorial integrity of the country; achieve economic development; restore the rule of law; eliminate poverty; eliminate bribery and corruption", the OPA President stated. |
