Decision to field monks in interest of the country by Deepal Warnakulasuriya The Sihala Urumaya which last week changed its name to the Jathika Hela Urumaya opting to field only Buddhist monks to contest the elections, claimed that the name change and the decision to field Buddhist monks was done in the interest of the country. Former SU Leader and JHU General Secretary Thilak Karunaratne said there was great need in the country to introduce some values and virtues and to the corrupt political field. "We changed our party name and symbol, subscribing to the wishes of the Maha Sangha, and it was done to save the country from destruction, corruption and waste", Karunaratne said, explaining that the JHU will campaign for virtue and righteousness arising from the observance of social and moral values as preached by the Lord Buddha. |
