Slow going - Thurstan 180 off 75.1 overs

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Thurstan batted painstakingly to reach 180 utilising 75.1 overs and Isipatana were 83 for 1 at close on the first day of their 41st annual 'Big Match' at the SSC grounds yesterday.

Isipatana who won a good toss put Thurstan into bat anticipating an early breakthrough, but Thurstan seemed to have decided to occupy the crease rather scoring and it was a hard grind for runs. Their 180 came off 75.1 overs. The only noteworthy feature in the Thurstan innings was the 50 run stand for the fifth wicket between Osuka Maharachchi ( 49) and Shehan Perera ( 14).

The pair brought the score from 90 for 4 to 140 for 5 and the rest of the Thurstan batsmen could not make much headway. Chatushka Wickremaratne was the main wicket taker for Isipatana with 3 for 32.

Thurstan however, got a vital breakthrough when they got rid of Isipatana opener Saman Nishantha bowled by Gayan Amarasinghe for 22, but Sanjaya Dilrukshan and Mario Amarasinghe batted sensibly to add 56 runs for the second wicket to end the day.
