St. Joseph's and St. Peter's take field without key players

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

It has been mixed fortunes for both the Josephians and the Peterites this season as they prepare for their 70th annual 'Big March' to be played at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium on February 27 and 28th.

Both teams have lost the services of their key players, the Peterites will be minus their skipper and wicketkeeper Gihan de Silva and the Joes will take the field without their key all-rounder Angelo Mathew - both are away in Bangladesh representing the Sri Lanka under-19 team at the Junior World Cup competition. In the absence of Gihan de Silva, Dinesh panditharathne will lead the Peterites.

The Josephians have played 16 matches so far and won four games outright and losing to D. S. Senanayake College while the Peterites have played 18 matches and have won three outright losing to Ananda.

The time is overdue for a result as the last win by the Joes was in 1972.

However, in 2002 the match ended in a draw after a 'cliff-hanger' when the Joes had to get 3 runs off 4 balls in semi-darkness with a wicket in hand in a match that would have swung either way it not for a crowd invasion.

For the Joes, opener left-hander Tharindu Ariyawansa is their chief performer with the bat topping the 650 run-mark with two centuries. Hashan Gunatileka is the next best with 550 runs inclusive of five half centuries. Sandun Dias has also reached the 600 run mark with two hundreds and three fifties.

Skipper Ranesh Perera with 450 runs and 60 wickets with his right arm leg spin has given a fine all-round performance. Christopher Fleming with 56 wickets is the man to watch as he has been very effective with his left-arm swing bowling.

For the Peterites, Hans Fernando has been among he runs with over 600 against his name and Sohan Boralessa stole the limelight recently taking all ten wickets in an innings against Wesley.

Former Ceylon and Leicestershire professional and Old Peterite Clive Inman's unbeaten 204 in 1954 still remains the highest individual score in the series and Shamal Warnakula's 9 for 41 in an innings for the Joes is the best bowling effort in the 'Big match' series.
