Ladies get an insight to keep fit and be free of diseases

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr.

Exercise, socialise and revitalise was the theme of a largely attended workshop conducted by a group of professionals in the field of keep-fit and disease free lifestyles organised by the Dynamicare Gymnasium in Anniewatte, Kandy.

This being a predominantly ladies gymnasium with males too being allowed, naturally it was the ladies who formed a major part of those present at this workshop. They came from all walks of life working girls, housewives, sportswomen, school girls and others who were weight and health conscious. Those handling the workshop provided them with valuable knowledge on how to lead a healthy life and avoid various diseases associated with the lifestyles of the people and their eating habits.

Mrs. Hiranthi Attyagalle - Directress of the Dynamicare Gymnasium which has some of the latest equipment, said that this Fitness Centre was started five years ago as she found that there was a need for a ladies gymnasium in Kandy, as at times some of the ladies are reluctant to exercise with the men.

The gymnasium is kept open from morning till 8 p.m. to cater to people from all walks of life and all strata of the society, so that they could make use of the facilities available during their leisure.

Men are also welcome to this gymnasium and a few of them come with their families but it still remains female dominated.

Mrs. Hiranthi Attygalle, coming from an aristrocatic stock from the Kandyan area, said they employ trained and qualified staff to help their clients in their endeavour to shed weight and keep fit. There is personal supervision so that the exercising is done systematically and scientifically in keeping with the requirements of the client. They must not try to do it on their own as they could end up a 'cropper'.

Mrs. Hiranthi Attyagalle said that this awareness programme is aimed at educating these involved in exercising that it should be a combined effort with diet and stress management. 'You must not do it haphazardly as the remedy could be more deadly than the disease itself. When you exercise your body and bones become supple and flexible otherwise you will become prone to many diseases.

Mrs. Hiranthi Attygalle knows what she is talking about as she is a diploma holder in Fitness and Nutrition, and old girl of Girls High School and has been in the field of fitness and nutrition for nine years. In conclusion, she said one must exercise in a systematic way to loosen one's limbs and refresh them and give them the much needed energy. You should not overload and like any machine it would crack up.

A little known fact is that fitness centres are doing a silent service to the community in producing stress-free and sickness free persons and counselling is too available.

At this workshop Dr. (Mrs.) Chandani Galwaduge gave some useful hints on what is healthy lifestyle and how to prepare one towards it. This was followed by the aerobic dance to the tintillating music for total body toning and building up a supple and shapely body.

Prof. R. Sivaganeshan spoke on the subject of 'Eating to stay healthy and fit and dwelt on the types of food and their calory content and how to control the calories and ways of shedding the extra calories.

Mrs. Dilmini Dissanayake's lecture on the subject of 'Improved posture and deportment kept the participants spellbound stressing on a persons gait and how to present yourself in a charming way to capture the attention of the audience. How to pose for photographs and to conceal the deficiency in the physique and to display an extra two inches in height while being seated. She also addressed on how to reduce your waistline which if started earlier in life is an easy process.

The demonstrators and the girls put on display Tae Bo Kick Boxing type exercises non-stop for 45 minutes accompanied by music which helps in a big way to shed extra fat and also make your body supple.

A panel discussion was followed by 'Musclerobics to tone and strengthening the muscles using weights. The participants were also given an introduction to Pilates method of exercise.

Dr. (Ms.) Paba Ginige, speaking on the subject of 'Managing Stress' gave an insight of this condition and to cope with it and lead normal lives and not to be engulfed by it which could be disastrous.

Finally Mrs. Maheshika Giragama addressed and demonstrated to the participants the importance of practising Yoga and multi benefits accruing from it and it could find cures to many conditions and ailments.

The participants expressed delight in the way this workshop was conducted and thanked the Management of Dynamicare Gymnasium.
