Piliyandala Central has edge against Taxila Central by DILWIN MENDIS Moratuwa Sports Corr. The fourth annual 'Big Match' between Piliyandala Central and Taxila Central, Horana, popularly known as 'Battle of the Centralians' will be played on 27th and 28th of February at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa. Piliyandala Central who started cricket in 1949 by the then vice principal and cricket coach Herbert de Silva. The inaugural inter-school match was played with Wadduwa Central. This year, Piliyandala Central seems to have the edge and will be led by fourth year coloursman Ramesh Padmika who is the highest wicket-taker among schools this year with 99 wickets in eight matches. He has taken ten-wicket hauls in all these matches which is a record. His deputy will be Dasun Ariyasinghe a good all rounder and Janak Rajapakse. There is also last year's skipper who is also a good all-rounder. The team is well balanced side with six outrights one first innings win and lost to St. Thomas' Kotte. The team consist of all the members who have played in the last year's Big Match. Veteran cricketer R. A. N. Perera (Percy) is the coach and Master-in-Charge is K. S. A. Dias. Taxila Central is led by fifth year coloursman and all-rounder Sameera Senaratne and third year coloursman and all-rounder Sena Chamara Lakmal as his deputy. Ten of their players have played for the last year's Big Match. The skipper is relying on Asanka Sampath, Kokila Harsa Kumara, Harsha Dilanga, Ushan Induranga, Srilal Pushpakumara, Rangana Lakmal and the stumper of the side Pubudu Ganegoda. So far Taxila have played eleven matches and with their experience they will give their opponents a hard time. |
