Lankan Sivendran loses in semis to Indian Raju by LAL GUNESEKERA Sri Lanka's hopes of winning an International Tennis Federation (ITF) singles title were crushed when Nishendran Sivendran was surprisingly defeated by fourth seeded Kaushik Raju of India at the 21st ITF Junior International Championship at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath yesterday. Raju won the semi-finals in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). There was yet another surprise in the other semi-final when the bottom seed in the boys singles, Hsin Han Lee of Chinese Taipei was put off the final beaten by unseeded Ju Young Im of South Korea in a three setter (3-6, 6-2, 6-0). After Sivendran's guty comeback win over Japan's Kazuuya One in a three setter on the previous day after three hours, seemed to have taken the toll of the Thomian schoolboy. Raju dominated his lacklustre opponent to win in nearly an hour and set up a meeting with Korea's Ju Young Im in the final today at 9 a.m. All, however, was not lost for Sri Lanka with S. Thomas' Prep schoolboy Amrith Rupasinghe and his Indian partner Kaushik Raju qualifying for the boys doubles final defeating India's G. S. Harik and N. Mohinta 6-2, 7-6 (3). Rupasinghe and Raju will meet Manu Bajapai of India and Thailand's Peerpach Tupwong in the final. The best the Sri Lankan girls could achieve was to field two quarter-finalists - Amitha Arudpragasam and Mahesha Seneviratne, who were seeded No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. Both were eliminated from the semi-finals of the girls singles. |
