Invitation cricket tourneys

Kandy Municipal Playgrounds Department has organised an All-Island Invitation softball cricket tournament for girls schools and a men's six-a-side cricket tournament from March 18 to 21 at the Getambe Municipal Playground.

The men's tourney is limited to teams from kandy District and 30 teams will be taken in on a first come first serve basis.

The girls school that will be invited are: Sangamitta Galle, Anura College Matara, Presbyterian School Dehiwela, Kegalle Balika, Mahamaya, St. Anthony's Balika, Swarnamali Balika and Gothami Balika from Kandy, Wattegama Balika from Wattegama, Jinaraja and Wickremabahu from Gampola.

Entries should be sent to: Harold Ranasinghe or Ranjith Colombage, Joint Organising Secretaries, Six-a-Side Cricket Tournament, Kandy Municipal Council, Kandy. Entries close on February 29.

Sri Rahula on 1st innings

Sri Rahula, Katugastota beat Sri Devananda, Ambalangoda by 50 runs on the first innings in their inter-school cricket match played at Ambalangoda recently.

Sri Rahula: 131 (S. Fernando 47, M. Bothotage 28, S. Thilakaratne 13 not out; O. Lasantha 4 for 23, S. Nuwan 6 for 39) and 142 (S. Fernando 19, K. Silva 17, A. Gunaratne 83; S. Nuwan 2 for 25, S. Mihiranga 2 for 20, D. Gunasinghe 4 for 11, O. Lasantha 2 for 32)

Sri Devananda: 111 (K. Dananjaya 16, D. Viduranga 19; V. Prasanna 4 for 23, A. Gunaratne 2 for 16, D. Bandara 2 for 36) and 105 for 1 wkt (K. Dananjaya 40, S. Kumara 60 not out).

Katukurunda races today

The Katukurunda Circuit for cars and motorcycles will be held today from 8.30 am onwards. Altogether entries have been received for both cars and motorcycles numbering around 130.

Foxhill super cross April 16 and 17

The 12th annual Fox hill Super Cross 2004 will be held on April 16 and 17 at Diyatalawa.

The race is being organised by the Sri Lanka Military Academy in conjunction with the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders. This event is expected to bring out the best in the drivers and riders on a track, which is up to international standards, and nearly 90 per cent of the spectators could witness all the twenty events, which had been scheduled by the organisers.

Deaf Schools netball final next Saturday

The Deaf Schools netball tournament final round will be played on Saturday, February 28 from 8.45 am onwards at the Deaf School Grounds at Ratmalana. The final is expected to be around 3.30 p.m.

The chief guest will be Minister of Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakhu while the guest of honour will be Mr. Kishu Gomes - Managing Director, Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited.

Dharmaraja College to improve facilities for sports

Jagath Samarasinghe, the newly appointed President of the Dharmaraja Old Boys Union has two major projects to be completed during his tenure of office.

One is the completion of the 20 million college playground development project, which has already commenced and 50% of the expenses collected. He has appealed to the old boys, parents of present boys as well as well wishers here and abroad to give their full support to collect the balance 50%.

The other project is the Rs. 13 million college swimming pool which was proposed by the old boys union - Colombo Branch.

He has also appointed committees of finance, sports, fund raising etc. He will be organising a fund-raising walk soon.

Samarasinghe will also organise sports competitions among old boys at rugger, soccer, cricket, table tennis etc. to strengthen the relationship among them.

Popular two-mile sea swim on March 7

Douglas V. Arndt, former Otter Aquatic Club swimmer who has won the prestigious Open Two-mile sea swim at Mt. Lavinia for six successive years from 1946 to 1951, will be the chief guest at this year's 67th Mt. Lavinia sea swim to be held on March 7 the start of which will be opposite the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

C. Vijitha Fernando, a former Secretary of the Ceylon Amateur Swimming Association (CASA) and the media spokesman for National Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka (NASU) said that Douglas V. Arndt now in Australia has confirmed his visit to Sri Lanka and accepted the invitation to be the chief guest at the two-mile sea swim which is still the 'Blue Riband' of long distance swimming in Sri Lanka.

NASU will close entries for this popular two-mile sea swim today, Sunday February 22 and expect a record number of swimmers to participate in this year's event. Last year, Ajith Kumara of Dolphin Aquatic Club won the men's event (47.07 secs) while Uma Kavya Dharmadasa of Musaeus College won the women's event (55.15 secs).
