President affirms stable economic policy by Don Asoka Wijewardena President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has reaffirmed her promise to stabilise the economy and carry forward the stalled peace process if she receives a clear mandate from the people. Janadasa Peiris, Presidential Director General of Media, told the "Sunday Observer" that the President had said that the people of this country had one clear issue before them - to decide whether to allow the UNF to continue with confrontational politics and destabilise the economy, or to set them aside. Peiris said that President Kumaratunga would commence open negotiations with the LTTE in total transparency together with relevant political parties with a fixed time frame and would consider to what extent power sharing to the LTTE could be granted, without dividing the country. He noted that the President was of the view that the six rounds of talks the UNF government had with the LTTE had ended in failure. Even the LTTE Leader V.Prabakaran had said that there had been no clear compromise, and pointed out that President Kumaratunga had denounced the statement made by the UNF government that only the Prime Minister could handle the peace process. E. Zuhair PC who is on the Freedom Alliance national list said that reports from the East had clearly indicated that there was overwhelming support for the Freedom Alliance as a result that the security in the area had improved dramatically. The Freedom Alliance campaign in the East is being led by Ferial Ashraff with the active support of four SLMC MPs,led by former Highways Minister A.L.M.Athaullah who joined the Freedom Alliance on account of security concerns. |
