Franchise only for 10% in N-E? by P. Krishnaswamy While the Elections Department is now in the process of considering all available options to provide facilities to the nearly 260,000 voters in LTTE controlled areas of the North-East to exercise their franchise in the April 2 polls. Political observers believe that due to various practical difficulties, only about 10 percent of them will be able to vote. The LTTE as well as human rights organisations have called upon the Elections Department and other government authorities concerned to provide facilities to the civilian population in the LTTE-held areas to exercise their democratic rights which has been denied to them for over two decades. |
