Parliamentary elections: 

NAC invites political parties for discussion to prevent serious crime

The 13 member National Advisory Council which met last Tuesday at the Internal Ministry have unanimously decided to invite all political parties contesting the forthcoming parliamentary elections for a discussion on preventing serious crime during elections and post election period.

Twenty-four political parties have been invited to take part in the discussion which has been scheduled for March 3. at the Internal Ministry. Invitations have already been sent to the political parties concerned, Internal Ministry sources said.

The National Advisory Council have decided to seek advice and guidance of all political parties to prevent violence during and post election period. The strategies discussed at the next session will then be forwarded to political parties and law enforcement agencies for implementation.

The Council headed by Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera.

The other members of the Council are Internal Ministry Secretary M.N. Junaid who will function as its Secretary, Most Rev. Oswald Gomis, Ven. Dr. Medagoda Sumanatissa Nayaka Thera, Archbishop of Colombo S. K. Sharma, Dr. M. A. M. Shukri, IGP, Indra de Silva, Godfrey Gunatilake, Dr. L. J. Mendis, Dr. Deepika Udagama, Central Province Governor, Monty Gopallawa, Governor Southern Province, Kingsley T. Wickremarate, Mahendra Amarasuriya, PAFFREL Director Kingsley Rodrigo, and Sarvodaya leader A.T. Ariyaratna.

The National Council is expected to set up Citizen Committees in areas to gather information relating to crime and methods of preventing crime. Each Citizen Committee will comprise of 15-20 members drawn from places of worship, police stations, NGOs and professionals.

The objectives of the National Council is to formulate and implement a national policy to combat crime and advice the police and the government on curbing crime. The Co-ordinating District Committees for curbing crime of the district are the District Secretary, Government Agents, and selected religious dignitaries to represent all religions of the district.
