35 scholarships from China The Chinese government has granted 35 scholarships to Sri Lanka for the academic year 2004/2005. This includes ten undergraduates and 25 postgraduate scholarships. According to the China Sri Lanka Education Agreement of 1980, 80 Sri Lankan undergraduates and postgraduates can study in China each year. Presently 45 Sri Lankans are studying in various universities in China. Under the China Scholarship Council regulations, Lankan students can study in over 83 universities and may apply for more than 280 subjects for their degree programme. According to information available to the Sri Lanka Embassy in China, most Sri Lankans apply for a few fields such as Chinese Language, Fine Arts, Medicine and Engineering. The Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing has submitted relevant information and course details to the Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Training in Colombo 7. Any government sector employee of any age can apply for the course from this year. This includes government departments, corporations, semi-government organisations and universities. These scholarships include monthly living expenses - Yuan 850 or Rs. 10,200 for undergraduates - and Yuan 1350 or Rs. 16,200 for postgraduate students, medical facilities, accommodation and book allowance. |
