Britain, Norway appeal for trouble-free elections Britain and Norawy have made a joint appeal for trouble-free elections in Sri Lanka. The appeal was made after the meeting between the British Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien and the State Secretary of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vidar Helgessen on February 23. British Foreign Office Minister O'Brien in his joint appeal with Norwegian Minister Vidar Helgessen stated: "Yesterday marked the second anniversary of the ceasefire agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Norway has been playing a vital role as a facilitator for the Sri Lankan peace process. I would like to underline the British Government's full support and appreciation of Norway's efforts, as well as the important role played by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. "The elections on April 2 come at a crucial time for the peace process in Sri Lanka. A permanent solution to the status of the North East is vital for Sri Lanka's long-term stability and prosperity. The peace process is a legitimate issue for Sri Lanka's political parties to have different views on. But we urge their leaders to ensure that their, and their supporters' actions and rhetoric during the election campaign do nothing to undermine the important gains that have been made in the peace process or to make it more difficult to resume peace talks after the election. |
