Election violence: UNF tops list

A total of 141 election-related violences were recorded by Police Election Secretariat (PES) up to yesterday morning.

According to DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne these included 124 acts of criminal violence.

For the 24-hours ended at 6 am Saturday, there had been two criminal offences recorded at the PES, both from Moneragala.

DIG Wickremaratne said investigations are being carried out into complaints made at the police against candidates Sripathi Suriarachchi (UPFA), Mahinda Ratnatilleke (UNF) and C. B. Ratnayake (UPFA).

He said SLFP organiser, Ratna Gamage had threatened police officers at the Welikada police station. The suspect had been under the influence of liquor at the time. Legal action is being initiated against him.

The number of complaints lodged by the main political parties from the day of nominations (Feb 17 to Feb 27), UNF-46, UPFA-43, JVP-16 and PA-13. However, up to now no major criminal offences have been reported, the DIG said.

Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva has advised all politicians to instruct their organisers and supporters not to carry any firearms with them. They are also being urged to refrain, as far as possible from consuming liquor and committing any acts of violence, to ensure a free and fair elections.
