Gems and jewellery : Sri Lanka can be a leading supplier

Sri Lanka could become a leading gem and jewellery supplier in the world, with the use of latest technology in manufacturing items suited for the modern taste, said Deputy President World Gold Council, K.Sivaram.

He urged Sri Lankan gem and jewellery industrialists to adopt modern technology, in order to be competitive in the global market.

Sivaram said that Sri Lankan gem and jewellery industrialists had a lot of potential and it was time they adopted new technology such as casting, which was proven to be effective.

He said that most of them still practised primitive methods for casting gem and jewellery. When casting was introduced in India a few years ago, the response from the industrialists was rather low, but gradually it increased when they were convinced of its advantages.

Sri Lanka had a strong resource base and, if the right kind of technology was used it would become a main jewellery supplier in the world, he said.

Referring to the South Asia region, he explained that India and Sri Lanka were dominating in terms of using modern technology, but there was much more to be done.

He said that India was the biggest gold and jewellery consumer in the world.

There was a tremendous potential for the gem and jewellery industry in the world, since there was a growing demand for ultra modern and exquisite items. Hobern, a UK based company, was also operating in India as Hobern Ltd., India, Sivaram said.

Hobern Ltd., India, had set up a casting unit in collaboration with the local partner, Colombo Machinery and Equipment Ltd.This unit would support the small manufacturers in the industry.

Sivaram, who attended a special seminar on "Jewellery casting for future" organised by the Colombo Machinery and Equipment Ltd. and Hobern Ltd., India in association with the World Gold Council, met representatives of the EDB and Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka and had discussions with them over future development of the industry.
