ACCA Sri Lanka to celebrate centenary

by Chanuka Mannapperuma

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Sri Lanka, the largest international professional accounting body, will celebrate its centenary this year on April 26.

At a press briefing held last week in Colombo, ACCA Sri Lanka announced that centenary celebrations would be held in nearly 30 countries during this year with a grand finale in UK on November 30, coinciding with its anniversary. Celebrations were held in Hong Kong early this year.

ACCA Sri Lanka President, Ajith Tudawe, said that ACCA had a student population of 320,000 training and working in 160 countries throughout the world. It had consistently achieved worldwide recognition and respect over the years from employers, governments and influential bodies such as the World Bank and United Nations.

He said: "In an increasingly globalising corporate environment, boundaries are fast diminishing and technology is bringing in sweeping changes; no one can predict for sure what the next hundred years would be". The core values of ACCA such as transparency and responsibility would remain relevant for ever. By remaining loyal to these core values, ACCA had provided rewarding careers for thousands around the world and it would continue to do so for the next hundred years, he added.

The theme of Sri Lanka celebrations will be on "Corporate Social Responsibility" to be held at the Colombo Hilton on April 26 at 7.30 am. Head of ACCA, Social and Environmental Issues, Ms. Rachel Jackson, and Senior Environmental Engineer, World Bank, Dr Sumith Pilapitiya will co-preside at the seminar.

This will be followed by a workshop on the importance of "Environmental, Social and Sustainable reporting", a concept pioneered by ACCA a decade ago, and launched in Sri Lanka for the first time in November last year. The workshop will be held at the same venue from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
