CEB asks industries to generate own power

by ANTON NONIS

The Ceylon Electricity Board assured there would be no power cuts in the near future, but called upon the industrial sector to help the CEB by generating their own power as much as possible. CEB chairman M. Zubair told the Sunday Observer that several big hotels and industries had agreed to use private sources of power, mainly generators.

He also said that several companies were helping the CEB by selling power to the main grid.

According to Zubair, there had been no rain in the hydro catchment areas since last October and the CEB is keeping a close watch on the depleting water situation daily, in coordination with the Mahaweli Authority and the Water Supply and Drainage Board.

Zubair said instructions have been given to the Board officials to use the available water in the hydro-electric reservoirs with utmost care. Priority will be given for drinking and irrigation purposes. The CEB produces only 15 per cent electricity by hydro and the rest is met by thermal power.
