Polls violence nears 400 mark by ANTON NONIS With less than three weeks left for the General Election, polls related violence have shown a steady increase with 393 incidents reported upto yesterday. According to the Police Election Secretariat Anuradhapura has topped the list with 32 incidents, followed by Ratnapura and Ampara with 29 and 26 incidents. A majority of the incidents (25, 28, 25 respectively) reported from the three regions are said to be criminal offences. Officials said 19 incidents were reported to the Secretariat from various parts of the island for the 24 hours ending at 6 am Saturday. Of these, 18 were criminal offences. Five persons of the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) including a Buddhist monk had sustained injuries when they were attacked by a rival gang while engaged in propaganda work in Bandaragama. The injured were admitted to hospital. Two suspects were arrested by the police in this connection. A total of 14 criminal offences had been recorded from Colombo Central up to yesterday. The Peoples' Alliance with 191 complaints leads the list, followed by the UNF with 105 and others 97. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratne said that under the instructions of Inspector General Indra de Silva, stiff security measures were being enforced in all districts to maintain law and order. Four police officials of the supervisory capacity had been sent to Chilaw to monitor the situation there. Meanwhile, Brigadier Jayawardene of the Eastern command said that there were no confrontations between the LTTE and the Karuna faction in the East so far. He said that the situation was being closely monitored and the Army was ready to tackle any situation if it warrants. |
