Sri Lanka makes determined bid to improve standing Sri Lanka have picked a strong four-member team in an attempt to gain promotion to Group III in the Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone) next year. This year, the Group IV tournament will be staged in Jordan from April 5 to 11. The Lankan team includes the reigning national champion, Franklyn Emmanual and three former champions in veteran Rohan de Silva, Rajiv Rajapakse and Renouk Wijemanne. The non-playing captain is former Davis Cup player and national champion, Lasantha Fernando, who has returned to the country after many years in the USA. The Manager will be Irshad Othman. Eleven countries will vie for honours in Jordan. They are Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Mynmar, Singapore, Bangladesh, Brunei, Turkminstan, Iraq and Jordan. The finalists will be promoted to Group III. The Junior Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone) will be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from April 26 to May 2, while during the same period, the Junior Federation Cup is to be staged in Jakarta, Indonesia. Colombo is also the venue for five other international events. The US $ 10,000 Women's Circuit is scheduled for August, men's Futures which is also a US $ 10,000 event in August-September, another men's Futures in October, US $ 5,000 masters also in October and an ITF Junior International Tournament in September. The Colombo Championship is scheduled for July, while the Junior National Championship and the 89th National Championship has been scheduled for August. (L.G.) |
