Captain Mathew George dies

A top basketball player of yesteryear, Captain Mathew George passed away recently and his funeral took place last Monday (March 8) at the General Cemetery, Kanatta.

A soldier to the end, Captain George, was recognisable anywhere with his trade mark moustache. He was a well-liked personality who played basketball for the Army and ended up as President of the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation at a time when the sport hit an all time high.

His home down Havelock Road was the venue for many 'meetings' where food and drink and laughter flowed. He was also President of Mercantile Rugby Section.

Captain George was predeceased by his wife Kusuma (a well-known sports personality herself).

He leaves behind two children - son Krishan (a former Royal and CR & FC ruggerite and reputed cager) and daughter, Krishani. May the turf lie lightly over him. (L.G.)
