SLFP-JVP reach consensus on portfolios

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

The SLFP and the JVP have reached consensus over the issue of portfolios. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga met a delegation of the respective parties at a meeting in Kandy yesterday. Both parties had agreed to continue the UPFA government programmes, Freedom Alliance sources told the Sunday Observer.

The JVP delegation led by UPFA Chairman Nandana Gunathilake MP, met the President and almost all their requests had been met by her at a discussion which lasted several hours.

The portfolios of (a) Agriculture, Lands, Irrigation and Livestock, (b) Fisheries and Marine Resources, (c) Rural Economic Development and (d) Cultural and National Heritage will be held by the JVP and sources confirmed that any subject which was under those ministries will not be slashed. The Sri Lanka Film Corporation which so far did not come under any ministry had also been co-opted to the Ministry of Cultural and National Heritage.

The sources pointed out that although the JVP was allocated four ministries, the subjects under them were those of eight ministries earlier. However, the only matter yet to be resolved was the subject of Mahaweli which the JVP wanted allocated to them, although this had been a separate portfolio, earlier.

The SLFP emphasised the fact that the Mahaweli was a separate Ministry for over 30 years and the party would like to see it continue as a separate ministry. An SLFP Executive Committee meeting had also been arranged yesterday evening to discuss the issue.
