HR parley 2004 next month

The National HR conference and HR Service Providers exhibition 2004, one of the biggest HR events in the South Asian region, will be held on May 19 and 20 at the BMICH, Colombo.

Themed HR competencies for high performing organisations, the congress is specially designed for HR professionals and people managers and is organised by the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM).

President IPM, Janaka Kumarasinghe, said that organisations are doing well financially as well as nonfinancially, but to face the stiff competition stronger organisations are needed. This is the rationale of selecting the above theme for the conference.

There would be 10 foreign speakers and they would share their experiences which would give the participants a feel of different view points.

He said, "in time to come, we can sell our country as a destination with good HR practices and not as a country where cheap labour can be sourced as we expose ourselves and network with HR practitioners and opinion makers around the world.

This would definetely attract more investors to the country in the future," said a confident Kumarasinghe.

The Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resource Management(APFHRM) would be holding its Executive Committee meeting in Sri Lanka since Kumarasinghe was also the President of APFHRM.

This would be followed by a pre conference international knowledge session where foreign and local experts would discuss emerging HR trends in their respective countries. Under the Indian exchange program, a special delegation would be in Sri Lanka for 10 days to participate at the conference and visit some industries as well.

The delegation of six members represent the states of Chennai, Calcutta and Orissa, he added.

The chief guest at the conference will be President of the Canadian Council of Human Resources Association Anne Chariette, while Secretary General, European Association for Personnel Management, Dr Hans Bohm, the guest of honour, would deliver the keynote address.

HR competencies for high performing organisations would be the theme of the CEO's forum . The guest panel comprises CEO Sri Lankan Airlines-Peter Hill, CEO Brandix -Ashroff Omar and CEO Singer Sri Lanka -Hemaka Amarasuriya. The moderator of this session would be Immediate Past President IPM and DGM HR Commercial Bank, M.N.J. Jayaratne.

The conference would include eight concurrent sessions under the themes of Competencies for people development, emerging world of work, creating a great place to work, building an effective work culture, Whither IR, key issues in reward management, creating a sense of belonging and a case for right sizing.

The HR Service Providers' exhibition would have around 50 stalls and this is the third consecutive year the exhibition is held.
