Leadership key to success

International Administrative Professionals'/Secretaries' week is an annual feature celebrated worldwide during the third week of April. But this year, it began on April 19 and ends (today) Sunday April 25.

To commemorate the event in Sri Lanka, a series of activities were organised educationally, socially and professionally.

"I would like to share the experiences I have gained over the years by being a Professional Secretary which I thought is appropriate," said Executive Secretary, Nawaloka Hospitals, Sunethra Jayaratne.

"I take pride being in this exciting profession, which has created a significant demand all over the world. Our profession has become more challenging and rewarding than ever before while recent technological and the ever changing atmosphere in the business environment has strengthened our capacity."

"The word 'secretary' seems to be fading away today but Professional Secretaries have made their position more viable being an administrative or managerial secretary. Whilst the demand for simple key board skills diminishes, the demand for secretaries /administrative professionals are becoming more complex.

"The secretarial profession has automatically widened its responsibilities automatically by entrusting more discreet projects, less supervision, enjoyment of greater autonomy and freedom to get on with the job.

"Another value added quality to sustain in the profession is to be a leader. A successful leader is one who commands the respect of people and he/she should be an example to others.

A leader will obviously have followers and it is your bounden duty to guide them to take up the challenge of being a leader. As the saying goes "Give respect to gain respect" it is you who have to image and protect yourself where you will be "wanted" by all.

"A namesake secretary does not have suitable qualifications. It is time to open your eyes in the context of today's world which is so competitive. Though this is a subject, where we could speak volumes, let me conclude with a thought for professional secretaries and for those who are aspiring to be so.

"A professional secretary will never adopt an "all mighty" attitude. They are firm but will signify the simplicity and flexibility at all times. Nothing is impossible and unreachable if you could take "NO" for an answer.

Sheer dedication and continuous commitment will reward you with success of being an admirable administrative professional secretary," Jayaratne concluded.
