Fashion, fabulous fashion Inspired by the greats

by Umangi de Mel

Seven designers, all geared up to taste the real essence of fashion and designing, capturing the latest trends and looks for the year 2004. Having finished the initial paper work, putting needle to thread, the youngsters take the first step to create their first designer outfit and make their visions a reality.

Lanka Institute of Fashion and Technology, L.I.F.T., seems to have turned a new leaf in fashion culture in Sri Lanka.

The advanced diploma students of L.I.F.T. have come up with seven designers outfits to match the spring/summer collection of the designer of their choice. "We had to choose a designer and create an additional garment as if we're working under him for his collection. It was great. We had to work on a tread-forecast for 2004/2005 as well", the students explain.

Having worked on seven different concepts they talk about their inspirations and tastes. 21 year old Inez Roanna says she chose Azzedine Alaia as her designer, "we had to select a designer of our style, someone who's close to our kind of styles and fashion. We were to make an additional garment for this particular designer's spring/summer collection. My dress has no darts to it, it's the specialty about my chosen designer. His clothes have no darts".

They say that her dress was draped to get the perfect tight fit. Catering to the chosen designer's likes, she's chosen red and black as her colours for the garment. "My designer often goes for dark colours, and he uses a lot of black. The dress I made stretches cause all Azadine's garments are quite tight.

Plus, he's known as the king of stretch. I've used satyn and a black knit lace for my dress which was inspired by my concept, "romance" she reveals that the looks for 2004/2005 include the 60s look, hippie look, 70s and 80s look. "And I've also included the Boudoir look".

The next in line, Daharmei Kotage who's 21, says that her concept was Dance.

"My designer's Alexander Mcqueen who has been inspired by Latin dance. He's the one who's invented the hipsters. Alexander is quite a controversial character who's very dramatic and he blends things what can't be put together. I've used chiffon, a knit fabric and denim for my outfit".

22-year-old Bhavana Jain says she's taken her inspiration from the 60s and the pop-art. "My designer's Dolce and Gabbana. I've taken the basic colours of blue, red and yellow. It's the short denim skirt that's was very popular in the 60s."

19-year-old Harshinie Jayawardena says she was inspired by Giorgio Armani. "His inspiration for the Spring/Summer collection is the sea. He's used colours like blue and white and my main theme was the star fish". She says that she's used net and a stretch fabric. "I sprayed it blue to get the wavy effect, and tussels to get the flowy sort of effect". Her attempt has been to create an underwater world with her concept.

22-year-old Kokum Jayaratne says she was inspired by Donatella Versace. "She's known for tight fitting clothes plunging necklines, slits, short skirts and very bright colours. Her recent collection consists of club wear. My theme was modern Cinderella where I've adorned my garment with beads and see-queens".

Devanmini Wickramaratne, who's 22, says that her concept was 'clouds'. "It's something that has life. I was inspired by all their dancing and drifting which I thought was quite stylish. The designer I've chosen is Valentino who's used flimsy and soft fabrics to create a fragile look. I chose white cause I believe it's pure and soothing." She's also used fabric embelishments and embroidery.

30-year-old Mahfooz, the last one standing says his concept was a woman who's passing through times looking for true love. "My designer's Gaultier, who's supposed to be the bad boy of French designers. He's got a notorious image for doing outrageous outfits. He's the one who put Madonna in a connical bra. His Spring/Summer collection was created out of cosmopolitan things. He's used the Salmon skin, Lizard skin, Python skin which is transparent.

My dress is called the 'Sofa dress'. Mahfooz says that he's used curtains and let parts of the particular woman's memory get stuck to her dress. "The applique on the dress symbolises her yearnings, desires and memories. She's a mind of her own and does crazy things", he concludes.
