Two comets in Lankan skies Two new comets, Comet Neat and Comet Linear, will be visible from Sri Lanka from May 19 - 22 and from May 4 - 10 respectively. According to Dr. Chandana Jayaratne, Senior Lecturer in Physics, University of Colombo and Principal Research Scientist on Space Applications, Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies, the Comet Linear will be at its best around May 19 with unfurled dust and gas tails in the South West skies after sunset. "The head of Comet Linear will be only three degrees away from Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, on May 22", he said. Meanwhile Dr. Jayaratne said the dimmer Comet Neat could be seen after the sun sets from the first week of May in the South West skies, a little left to Sirius. "The best dates to watch the Comet Neat will be from May 4-10 after sunset in the South West when it will be at its brightest," he said. Dr. Jayaratne said both the comets will appear in the evening sky during the third week of May. "There will be a total lunar eclipse on May 4 at 11.51 pm," he added. |
