Police helpless to nab murder suspects in NE

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

The police are relentlessly pursuing investigations that led to several murders in the North- East during the recent Parliamentary Elections but the suspects could not be arrested as they have fled in to LTTE controlled areas. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Indra de Silva said while addressing the media at the Police Headquarters recently.

The IGP was replying to questions fielded by the media regarding investigations launched by the police during election period. Referring to violations of election law and other malpractices during this period, the police would seek the advice of the Attorney General after inquiries are completed.

However with regard to offenses such as simple assaults, threats and intimidation and for other transgressions, the police would file action in courts. We are investigating into 169 false complaints made by a person in respect of election violations, he said.

Asked whether to which political party he belonged to, the IGP declined to comment on the matter.

Referring to the forthcoming North Western Provincial Council (Wayamba) Elections he said that strategies are being worked out to conduct a peaceful election without being marred by a sudden upsurge of violence as in the past. A deployment of about 5000 police personnel were posted to the North Western Provincial Council for this purpose. Around 300 policemen took up duties in Wayamba.

Asked whether the Special Task Force (STF) would be deployed in the Wayamba, he said the STF and armed personnel are usually deployed to augment the police strength but there is no need for it this time.
