Double celebrations - Kingswood champs beat St. Peter's 46/5 in cup final

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr.

Kingswood College, Kandy once again proved that they are the 'Kings of Rugby' in the local scene when they outclassed St. Peter's College by 46 points (3 goals, 5 tries) to 5 (1 try) in hopelessly one-sided final to become Cup Champions at the Golden Key Privilege Card 'Kings of Rugby' Sevens.

The tourney was organised in connection with the Centenary celebrations of Kingswood Union and sponsored by Golden Key Privilege Card Company Ltd., and played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy before a large crowd yesterday.

At half time the Kingswoodians were in command leading 31 - 0.

Leading the scoring spree of the Kingswoodians was their skipper and stand off Fazil Marija who scored three scintillating tries and added the extra points himself to lift the award for the 'Most Valuable Player of the Tournament'. Two of his tries were blazing sixty metre runs which left the Peterite defence stupefied.

The other try scorers for Kingswood were prop Gemunu Kirinde (1), scrum half Heshan Premaratne (1), winger Mohammed Jabbar (1), centre Madhuka Tennakoon and flanker Mohammed Rizvi. The Peterites scored their solitary try in the dying stages of the game through winger Shan Khalid.

Dilroy Fernando refereed.

Earlier in the Cup quarter finals Kingswood beat Science College 47-0, Wesley beat Vidyartha 26-7, St. Peter's beat St. Anthony's 26-5, St. Sylvesters beat Ananda 37-0. In the semi-finals Kingswood had a testing time before beating Wesley 17-12, and St. Peter's beat St. Sylvester's 28-5.

St. Anthony's College, Kandy became Plate champions when they beat Science College by 24 points (2 goals, 2 tries) to 19 (2 goals 1 try) after leading 19 - 5 at the breather.

Priyantha Nawaratne refereed.

Thurstan - Bowl champs

The losing quarter finalists played in the Plate semi finals with Science College beating Vidyartha College 21-5 and St. Anthony's College drubbing Ananda College 33-0.

Thurstan College won the Bowl championship by defeating Nalanda College by 16 points (3 tries) to 10 (2 tries) after leading 10-5 at the lemon.

In the Bowl quarter-finals D. S. Senanayake College beat Zahira College 21-17, Nalanda College beat Sri Rahula College 34-0, Thurstan College beat Dharmaraja College 17-5.
