Shiranee Perera keen to uplift standard of Sri Lanka netball

The Asian Umpires Presenters Course in netball organised by the Asian Netball Federation was held in Singapore recently and Sri Lanka was represented for the first time with Shiranee Perera being nominated by the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka.

Shiranee, a former national player, qualified coach and a reputed umpire followed the course, successfully going through contents of the course qualifiers of a presenter, match protocols, teaching techniques, making teaching aids, rules in action, testing of umpires and practical presentation. Netball umpires from Thailand, Maldives, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore participated at this course and Mrs. Chris Burton, Australian National Director of Umpiring conducted the Presenters Course.

According to Shiranee, the objectives of this two-part course was to standardise the content, methodology and skills of the umpire Presenters in Asia, which in turn will upgrade the skills of the umpires and ultimately enhance the level of netball played in the Asian region.

Shiranee said that she would like to impart her knowledge to train local umpires in the modern methods to gain more experience at international levels.

For the first time, the local authorities are planning to have the Australian Track 'C' Netball Umpiring Badge in Sri Lanka in July this year, prior to the Asian Junior Netball championships to be staged here in August.

In preparation of this exam, workshop have been organised by the panel appointed by Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka. The first workshop will be held on May 2 at the Sports Ministry Auditorium at Torrington Place. The course will be conducted by Shiranee Perera, assisted by Miss Desima Fernando, Miss Biyanka Wathukara and Mr. Deepthi Samaranayake.
