Caltex supports rugby football again

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Overall, I am happy with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) and will continue with our support which started in 1999, but hope that better results could be achieved on the international scene. So said the Managing Director of Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited, Kishu Gomes at the Galle Face Hotel on Thursday to announce the commencement of the Caltex 'A' division League Championship which kicked off on Friday.

He further said that Caltex together with the SLRFU are committed to ensure that the game once again gets the pride of place in the country's sporting arena, while Caltex will continue with the Caltex Touchdown Rugby Awards in association with the Sunday Observer of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL). Caltex are also having 'live' TV coverage on MTV on Saturdays.

The President of the SLRFU, Mohan Balasuriya, said that any sports organisation need funds and was very grateful to Caltex who moved into sponsoring rugby after the earlier sponsor withdrew due to circumstances beyond them.

The SLRFU have also drawn up a "Code of Conduct" (regulation 20 of the IRB) and forwarded it to all clubs as a guideline and severe disciplinary measures are to be taken against any person who violates the Code of Conduct. Match Commissioners are also to be appointed to every game by the SLRFU.

Meanwhile, Tony Amith who heads the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Referees Association (SLRFRA) that their dispute with the Navy has been settled by the SLRFU who have informed them about this matter in a communication. Officials of both Army and Navy were alleged to have verbally abused two senior referees (Dilroy Fernando and Nizam Jamaldeen) last season during the Premier Championship.
