Toyota Lanka joins Toyota OMESA No.1 Club

Toyota Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., sole distributor for Toyota vehicles in Sri Lanka, was honoured by Toyota Motor Corporation for achieving the No. 1 position in vehicle sales in Sri Lanka. Toyota OMESA Club consists of distributors or countries, which Toyota holds the No. 1 position or the highest market share. Toyota Lanka will join this elite club along with Australia, Nepal from year 2004.

Toyota Lanka Sales Manager, Rukshan Navaratne, said that the success of the Toyota Lanka was the result of team effort of all employees of the company. In the areas of sales and marketing activities, the views of all employees were given due recognition and in many areas their inputs had contributed a great deal in improving the performance and changing marketing techniques of the company.

The marketing and sales department had regular brain storming sessions with the employees concerned where free flow of views and ideas were encouraged. These sessions had helped to identify the strong and weak points and the shortcomings, thus helping the company to charter a more people oriented systems. The other area that had contributed to improving efficiency and achieving better results was the incentive scheme that was applicable to all categories of employees. This had been devised on the basis that success was a team effort and therefore every employee deserved to be rewarded. The incentive scheme motivated all employees to put in extra effort on to the tasks assigned to them, Navaratne said.

"For Toyota Lanka their staff is the biggest asset. Every possible step is being taken to protect their interests, improve their quality and make them loyal, customer-oriented employees. In this regard, well laid out in house training programs are being conducted by highly competent persons drawn within and outside and also where necessary specialised training is provided overseas to selected employees.

"Toyota Lanka also introduced Toyota Prius - world's first commercially manufactured hybrid vehicle. "Before marketing this product, Toyota Lanka wants to technically competent about this product, so we have to wait few months before commercially selling it to Sri Lankan market," said Navaratne. We want the government seriously to consider giving tax reliefs to environment friendly vehicles such as toyota Prius.

So, more people of Sri Lanka will be able to drive these products and damage for the environment will be minimum."

Toyota became the second largest vehicle manufacturer in the world in 2003 beating Ford Motor Company, USA. Within few years, Toyota undoubtedly would reach the top spot. In 2004, Toyota Lanka strategies are focused to be the market leader. Mr. Navaratne is confident with all the changes taking place in the organisation, will make it a reality.
