HSBC lantern competition The Vesak Lantern competition for children of poor circumstances would be held at the Bambalapitiya branch of HSBC on May 4 and 5. It is the fifth consecutive year HSBC is organising this competition. The children who take part are from the children of Vajira Shri Rehabilitation Home Kotte, Sri Lankadara Society Wellawatte, Lauries Girls Home Borella, Yashodara Nivasa Ratmalana, Sangamitta Balika Nivasa Kohuwela and Cancer Hospital (children's ward) Maharagama . The staff have worked tirelessly with the children at these homes over the past few weeks and together have constructed lanterns that will be on display to the public at the Bambalapitiya Branch. Each lantern promises to be a unique creation with intricate details and unusual designs. The panel of judges will thereafter select the most creative and most traditional lanterns and the winning entries will receive handsome cash awards. One member of staff spoke of her experiences visiting the orphanage as a wonderful opportunity to interact with the children. "They really look forward to spending time with us and we have built up a wonderful rapport with these kids over the years." Yet another member of staff added," Working with the children from the Cancer Hospital was truly a unique experience. Some of them are critically ill and we were so very glad that we were able to spread some cheer and make this day special for them." |
