Hot Stuff on a Cold Night : Rockfest Trinity Finale - Nuwara Eliya The Rock Fest Trinity Tour 2004 came to an exhilarating climax on the Saturday April 10 at the Boat House Nuweraeliya. The hills shuddered with the echoes of Sri Lanka's loudest and finest talents pouring out their souls with passion intertwined.
The show kicked off with the acoustic maestro Dylan Jayakody who lifted up the chilled spirits of Rock fans who gathered in masses just after a heavy shower ceased. Dylan's ability to accompany himself on an acoustic guitar and maintain such a degree of vocal control was a revelation in itself considering the biting cold that had begun to surface. Following Dylan performed a very unique band; Tapas hailing from Kandy. Tapas comprising of Raju, Tilak and Pablu played a mystical genre of their own invention of Rock which they call Manthra Rock consisting of set of their own compositions. Gospel Rockers Ezra brushed up the cold atmosphere with a tight display of energy and showmanship that left the audience entertained.
Then came the ghouls of Rock; Stone Broke with their authentic Gothic Rock - complete with face paint and a sound that shattered the odd placidity of the mist and gloom backed up by spectacular lighting that proved to be one of the bands finest performances to date. Next Stigmata the demi gods of metal in Sri Lanka took the stage and virtually burnt the hills with a set comprising of only originals including some brand new tracks due to be released latter this year. Andrew played some stunning lead guitar with techniques that virtually shocked the crowd. The power packed vocals belted out by Suresh surely established that he is probably the best Rock singer in the rock genre in Sri Lanka today. The crowds who were by then starting to get a bit chilly got all fired up with Stigmata's blitzing set that is bound to be remembered for quite some time. In the wake of Stigmata, Kandy's second product that night Paranoid Earthling ripped into a frenzy of originals and covers having everyone pulsating and moving for their infectious tunes. The band lead by Mirshad proved their talent for rock music with great showmanship on stage. Whirlwind ended the night on a perfect high note with their renditions of two covers which included an Iron maiden and a Nevermore cover and their stunning originals as heard on their best selling album 'Weedana' that is the first ever Sinhala rock album in this country. The band is set to embark on a local tour to promote this album in the near future. The Rock Fest Trinity Tour drew phenomenal crowds at all three legs, reflecting the friendship and camaraderie, loyalty and the love for the same raw, passion driven thunder of rock. All those who missed out on the tours missed out on a legendary event. - Lotus Eater |
