India to set up fully equipped hospital at Dickoya

by Carol Aloysius

The government of India is to gift a fully equipped 250 bed hospital at Dickoya, to the Ministry of Health. A team of Indian delegates together with the Indian Deputy High Commissioner has already met with the Minister of Health Care, Nutrition and Uva Wellassa Development, and discussed the nature of the hospital modalities.

"My Ministry has assured the Indian government that Sri Lanka will give its fullest co-operation to ensure the early construction of the project, and to sort out any problems connected with it", Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Sunday Observer.

The Sunday Observer learns that the Health Minister will visit the site today with a visiting Indian delegation, to ensure the early implementation of the project. The new hospital will consist of four specialities in the areas of surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, general medicine and paediatrics.

"There will be special emphasis on respiratory infections as a large number of residents living up country suffer from respiratory diseases", Minister de Silva said.

The Minister said he had also had lengthy discussions with the Indian delegation to obtain more cardiac thoracic surgeons, oncologists, physicists, physiotherapists as well as occupational therapists from India as there was a serious shortage of personnel in these specialised fields in Sri Lanka.

"Our discussions also revolved around a possible donation from the Indian government to establish a fully equipped cancer hospital in Sri Lanka", the Minister said.

The Minister is expected to meet the Indian Minister of Health when he attends the World Health Assembly in Geneva this month, to discuss issues related to the new hospital.

A high powered delegation from the Health Ministry headed by its Secretary, Ministry of Health, Ranjith Maligaspe is also expected to visit India in June to finalise negotiations in respect of the new hospital.
