by Ananda Kannangara

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has announced that a large number of vacancies currently exist for Sri Lankan professionals in foreign countries and those vacancies would be filled under a special program due to be implemented shortly.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer newly appointed Chairman of the SLBFE Karunasena Hettiarachchi said that recent statistics have revealed that 70 per cent of these vacancies existed in Middle Eastern countries.

"A number of local professionals including doctors, engineers and accountants got an opportunity to work in foreign countries during the past year and we are expected to double this number in the coming months," he said.

He also said in addition to these professional jobs, statistics have also revealed that many more job opportunities are available for computer programmers, nurses, qualified teachers and also for executives in star class hotels.

Apart from Middle Eastern Countries job opportunities are also available in several Asian, African and Western countries.

A few local professionals have also found jobs in Canada, Italy, Japan and Australia," he added.

"Meanwhile, out of 120,000 Lankans who took up foreign employment last year, more than 90,000 went as house maids while the others left for various other employment categories including clerical, supervisory and labour work in garment factories, plantation sector and other industrial establishments," Hettiarachchi said. "At present, almost all Lankans seek foreign employment through the Bureau since they receive many benefits and facilities including medical facilities and insurance policies ".

"In addition to this, their family members are also given priority when obtaining bank loans from the two State banks, People's Bank and Bank of Ceylon," he added.
