New appointments

Zuhair new chairman Rupavahini

President's Counsel M. M. Zuhair has assumed duties as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC).

Addressing the senior managers the new Chairman of the SLRC urged them to cooperate with him in developing the institution.

It has a very important role in the life of the nation. It is an institute closely linked to the every day life and welfare of the people of the country. 'We must work in accordance with the aspirations of the people, the new SLRC chairman said.

Zuhair paid a tribute to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Media and Communication Minister Reginald Cooray for giving him the opportunity to perform his duties to best of his ability for the nation through a prestigious National Institute like Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation.

Hemantha Warnakulasuriya - new Chairman of the Legal Aid Foundation

Bar Council of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka appointed Mr. Hemantha Warnakulasuriya as the Chairman of its Legal Aid Foundation and the Human Rights Centre for the year 2004/2005.

Mr. Hemantha Warnakulasuriya had served the Bar Association as its Secretary during the most turbulent period of its history (1989-1991) when lawyers were routinely killed by marauding mobs whilst in the act of performing their professional duties.

In his capacity as Secretary of the Bar Association, Mr. Warnakulasuriya was actively instrumental in safeguarding the interests of the lawyers who appeared for habeas corpus and fundamental rights applications. It was during his tenure of office and mainly due to his unstinted efforts that the Human Rights and Legal Aid Centres of the Bar Association came into existence.

These centres took over the cases of the detenues incarcerated in various camps and thereafter filed action in the Supreme Court.

Subsequent to this, Mr. Warnakulasuriya served as Chairman of the Legal Aid Commission for a period of nearly ten years.

Mr. Hemanta Warnakulasuriya was unanimously elected Deputy President of the Bar Association at the first meeting of the council's current term.
