Premajayantha to hold reins tight by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE The education system needs a complete overhaul to produce graduates of various disciplines who could contribute to the growth of the economy. The notion most unemployed graduates perceive that they cannot find employment in the private sector owing to their poor knowledge in English or because they do not come from the correct background is a fallacy, Professor Gunapala Nanayakkara told the Professionals Association of the Post Graduate Institute of Management. Professor Nanayakkara said the university system was faulty as it does not cater to the needs of the industry. "Do our universities offer degree courses in the manufacture of ceramics, or for that matter, in paddy or coconut?" he asked. Universities produce graduates not needed by the industry. Degrees have to be introduced in various new disciplines. We must get the academics to think on these lines to change the system of university education, he added. The chief guest, the Minister of Power and Energy, Susil Premajayantha, said the policy of the Government is to reform its public sector by adding professionalism to its activities. The private sector too has undergone several changes after switching over to the free economy with young professionals being recruited to top posts. Several large public corporations too have been privatised during the last two decades. Referring to the power situation, the Minister said the country is in a crisis situation owing to coal power projects not taking off the ground. "There isn't sufficient hydro-power and we have to depend on thermal power generation. Plans are afoot to complete the Kotmale project in due course," he said. Former Minister Rajitha Senaratna said he was glad the Professionals Association of the Post Graduate Institute of Management has considered joining the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka. |
