EU Election Observation Mission to end on May 2 After two months in the country, the European Union Election Observation Mission closed its offices yesterday. The six experts composing the core team based in Colombo will leave on May 2. EU EOM Chief Observer, Mr. John Cushnahan, will come back to Sri Lanka shortly to present the final report of the mission. In the course of his visit, Mr. Cushnahan will hold meetings with election authorities, the Government, political parties, the media and civic society groups in order to discuss with them the EU EOM's conclusions and recommendations. The EU Election Observation Mission has been established in the country upon the invitation of the Election Commissioner of the Republic of Sri Lanka to observe April 2 Parliamentary Elections. In addition to the Chief Observer, the mission was composed of a core team of election experts: Carlo F. Accame (Deputy Chief Observer), Delphine Blanchet (LTO Co-ordinator), Philip Jol (Operation Expert), Giovanna Maiola (Media Expert), Victor Perez (Security Expert) and Gilles Saphy (Election/Legal Expert). The mission also included 20 Long Term Observers (LTO) and 40 Short Terms Observers (STOs) who were deployed throughout the country. The EU EOM continued its activities after Election Day by carrying out post election observation. |
