Norwegian delegates to meet President today by S. Selvakumar The Norwegian team that arrived in the island yesterday will meet with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga today. The subject of discussion will be the resumption of the Government-LTTE peace process before the top level Nordic team proceeds to Kilinochchi tomorrow to meet with the LTTE delegation. The Norwegian after officially communicating with the LTTE the government's willingness to restart the stalled peace process, will also brief the LTTE on the President's thinking on the recommencement of peace talks. The Norwegian delegation arrived in the island yesterday after President Kumaratunga contacted Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik over the phone last week and requested him to make arrangements to restart the stalled peace process. Responding to the President's request to Norway, LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan told the Sunday Observer last week that the LTTE was aware of the President's request to Norway, but the organisation was awaiting official intimation from the Norwegian team. The Norwegian team that arrived yesterday was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Vidar Helgessan and comprised special envoy Erik Solheim and other Foreign Ministry officials.Yesterday morning, Helgessan met Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and was also scheduled to meet former Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNF team that represented the former government at the stalled peace talks. Meanwhile, a team of US diplomats headed by US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Jeffrey Lunstead visited Jaffna on Wednesday to make an on-the-spot study of the ground situation there. |
