Two Canadians, American die in Rome hotel fire ROME, Saturday (Reuters) A Canadian couple and an American died in a fire at one of Rome's most prestigious hotels early on Saturday, a spokesman for the city's fire service said. The American man plunged to his death after throwing himself off one of the balconies of the six-storey Hotel Parco dei Principi ai Parioli, trying to escape the flames. Officials said at least five people also suffered from smoke inhalation in the fire that started at around 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) in a room on the third floor. The names of the three killed were not immediately released. Smoke was still billowing from the five-star hotel in the early morning, although firefighters said they had put out the blaze which had quickly spread through the third and fourth floors. Dozens of pyjama-clad guests fled into the streets in the wealthy Parioli district of Rome as fire and smoke engulfed guests' rooms. Officials said investigations were under way as to the cause of the blaze. Among the guests were several tennis players in town for the Rome Open Tennis Masters next week. U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was a guest at the hotel earlier this year, local media reported. |
