Death of Vincent Vass, great loss to cinema

Media Minister Reginald Cooray has described the death of veteran film actor Vincent Vaas as a great loss to the cinema loving people in the country.

Vaas has contributed immensely to the film industry in Sri Lanka, the Minister said.

Born in Beruwala on November 7, 1922, Vaas was the fifth child in a family of ten. He represented the early era of the Sinhala film industry by acting in around 150 films. He first entered the "Jaya Sri' stage drama circle and later made an immense contribution to the Sinhala silver screen.

Vaas was honoured with the "Ranathisara Sarasavi Award" for playing major roles in popular films including Sandeshaya, Haralakshaya, Ranmuthuduwa and Getawarayo.

Also a musician and a singer, Vaas was a mild mannered and kind hearted man with rare qualities. This immensely helped him to have a close rapport with the Sinhala film industry.

"I take this opportunity to convey my deepest sympathies to Mrs. Agnes Cooray, the children and family members of the late Vincent Vaas," the Minister said.
