Nominations for PC Elections from next week by E. Weerapperuma Nominations for the elections of the remaining four Provincial Councils will be received from Friday, May 21 to Friday, May 28 by the Returning Officers at the respective Divisional Secretariats of the provinces. Nominations for the Uva and Central Province will be accepted from May 14 to 21. Commissioner of Elections announced on Friday that the returning officers will receive nominations from all registered political parties and independent groups contesting the forthcoming Provincial Council Election. This is the first time six Provincial Council Elections will be held on one day. Though the term of the Southern Provincial Council due to expire on July 8, the Governor dissolved the Council on the midnight of May 5 making it possible to hold the election on the same day. While the two main political forces are yet to decide on their nominees, Nava Vamansika Peramuna leader Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne said his party has decided to contest both the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces at the elections. The Jathika Hela Urumaya will decide whether they will field candidates to contest the Provincial Council Elections and if so, whether the candidates will be a mixture of religious and laymen. In the meantime, Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka has invited the returning officers of the respective district for a meeting today. Attention will be focused on the issue of conducting the Provincial Council Election. The one-day elections come on a request made by Provincial Council and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon from the President who is also keen to have the six Provincial Council Elections held on the same day. The term of office of the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils came to an end on April 23 and the Uva Provincial Council on April 26. Provincial Councils in the Western Province and North Central Province were automatically dissolved on May 5. |
