Vesak in London by Ramani Kangaraarachchi in London A blood donation campaign will be held at the Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara in Cheswick, London today (9) for the second consecutive year, to commemorate Vesak. Head of the Vihara Most Venerable Pandith Medagama Vagiragnana told the Sunday Observer that a blood donation campaign was an unusual event among the people there when he introduced it for the first time last year. "But the response was good and nearly 100 people from all communities donated blood. I expect a better response this year", he said. 'Atasil' was held on May 2 where nearly 200 Sinhala Buddhists and British people participated. Ambassador of Myanmar in UK, U Kyaw Win and Representative of the Sri Lanka High Commission, K. W. S. Gauthamadasa were present to hoist the Buddhist flag and light the traditional oil lamp. Here some devotees are offering dana to those who observed sil. The Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara in London is a leading centre for Theravada Buddhism, founded in 1926 by Anagarika Dharmapala. It was the first Buddhist monastery to be established outside Asia. |
