Pallekelle inmates observe sil for Vesak by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN Over 200 inmates of the Pallekelle Open Prison Camp observed sil in connection with Vesak. The Superintendent of Prisons of the Camp, Tissa Jayasinghe said there was no compulsion for the prisoners to observe sil, but those in the last lap of their jail sentence, did so of their own accord. "They were very enthusiastic and this was a good sign as in a few months, they will be getting back in to society after being rehabilitated and learning several trades so that they can earn an honest living without getting back to crime", he said. The inmates in this 165-acre camp also made Vesak lanterns. Nearly a hundred inmates were released from the Open Prison Camp for Vesak before their term came to an end. There are around 400 inmates at this Open Prison Camp. They are taught various trades such as growing vegetables, baking bread and making footwear and headwear. |
