Top performers will go to World Junior C'ships in July

Over 500 young athletes both boys and girls will have the great opportunity to show their skills at an athletic meet held in connection with the World Athletic Day to be held today, Sunday, May 9 at the Torrington Square grounds, Colombo 7 commencing at 9.00 a.m.

Those athletes performing well at this meet will get the chance of representing Sri Lanka at the Junior World Athletic Championships to be held in Morocco from July 14 to 17.

The athletes will compete in under-17 and under-18 and the events to be held are boys - 100 and 400 metres hurdles, 1,500 metres, long jump, discus throw, walking race 3 kilo metres. Girls - 100 and 200 metres hurdles, high jump, javelin throw, walking race 1 km.

Competitors could take part in only three events and those who have not yet send their entries should contact Bernard Perera, Assistant Secretary, AAA of Sri Lanka on Sunday, before 7.30 a.m.

The winners will be presented certificates and T-shirts by the International Athletic Federation.

There will be a lottery amongst winners at this meet and the lucky'uns will get the opportunity to go to Morocco for the Junior World Athletic Championships. (L.F.)
