Army keep unbeaten record - beat Havies 24/11

by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Army kept their unbeaten record undented with an impressive 24 points ( A goal, a try and four penaties) to 11 ( One try and two penalties) win over Havelocks in their Caltex 'A' division league rugger encounter at Army Grounds Galle Face yesterday.

Havelocks led 11 points to 9 at the breather but lost their way in the second half with the soldiers coming back strongly to take the game with them at the final whistle.

Nothing spectacular happened in the first half with both sides engaging themselves in a forwards battle and aimless kicking. Possession was equally shared in the initial half with Havies and the Army failing to convert them into points due to mistakes.

Tualage Ajith Silva the Army full back was the main point scorer when he collected 14 points with his unerring kicking out of the 24 points scored by the Army with the inclusion of a conversion.

Havelocks and Army both opened scoring with penalties scored by Saliya Kumara and Silva but Havelocks forged ahead when Lalinda Rodrigo gave the finishing touches to a three quater move to an unconverted try. Saliya Kumara fired over another penalty to give the Havies the advantage. T.A.Silva made no mistake putting over two penalties in rapid succession to reduce the gap 9-11 for the Army at the short whistle.

On resumption, the Army seemed to gave their game planned better and it was quite apperent that during mid second half the name of the game seemed to be the survival of the fittest. The soldiers had their energy preserved and the Havies wilted under the pressure applied by the Army.

They got their combination right and ran the ball and planted two tries one by Saman Madurasinghe and the other by Kenyan Edwin Shimanga. T. A. Silva gave the extra points to the Madurasinghe try, but failed to put over the second conversion.
