A record increase in fish exports

Fish and Fishery products (without aquarium fish) exports from Sri Lanka has recorded an increase of 19.2% last year, revealed the Export Development Board, (EDB) statistics.

Assistant Directress,(Export Agriculture Division) of the EDB, S.Narandeniya said,that at present Sri Lanka exports fish and fishery products to 10 main countries around the globe including Japan, United states, UK, Hong Kong, France, Singapore, Germany, Taiwan, South Korea and EU countries, quoting from Sri Lanka Custom statistics.

"There is a good demand for our fish and fishery products. Currently, Sri Lanka is exporting varieties like tuna, prawns, lobsters, crabs and other fishes," she added.

At present, Sri Lanka exports fish in the forms of frozen, fresh and preserved. The main contributors to last year increase were Japan and USA.

In 2002 fish valued at US $ 41,533 million was exported to Japan while in 2003 this figure rose to US $ 44,737 million. Also, US $ 9365 million worth of fish was exported to the United States in 2002,it has increased US $ 14,515 million in 2003.

She said that they had organised a seminar in association with Malaysian association with a view to expanding the export market in Sri Lanka.

" In Sri Lanka fishermen use very premature techniques and primitive equipments, for fishing which causes damage to the catch. At the seminar boat owners and fishermen were shown how to catch fish in the right way," she added.

Meanwhile, the demand for Ornamental fish has also increased. Exports were valued at US $ 5.53 million while it increased to US $ 6.05 million in 2003.

The main export markets for ornamental fish are Japan and USA. The most popular varieties are Gold fish, Angels and Mollies.
