More subsidies for farmers by Anura Maitipe The Treasury has granted financial subsidies to fertilizer manufacturing companies to sell a pack of 50 kilos of urea at a reduced price of Rs. 600, Additional Director, Finance Ministry, M.G. Jayatissa told the Sunday Observer. He said the price reduction was effected by the government recently and it included transport and handling charges. A 50 Kg. bag is was priced at Rs. 600 and irrespective of the brand, a 50 Kg. urea bag has to be sold at Rs. 600 islandwide. The government has requested the public to inform the Ministry Secretary, Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Ministry in Colombo if any distributor sells a 50 Kg. bag more than the stipulated amount. During the previous government, the price of fertilizer was increased from Rs. 400 to Rs. 800 despite the reduction in the price of urea in the world market. With the price hike of fertilizer by the previous government a 50 kilo bag of Urea stood at Rs. 800, Mada Pohora Rs. 1237, TVS Rs. 1298 and potash Rs. 1298. The government has requested all local fertilizer manufacturers and distributors to reduce price of fertilizer in par with the reduction of the urea price. |
